The Scharnhorst Line

October 2–3, 1944

BACKGROUND TO BATTLE

The First US Army arrived on the German frontier during the second week of September 1944, and made numerous uncontested penetrations of the Westwall fortified line. The border city of Aachen was enveloped from the south, and plans were made to complete the encirclement from the north during the first week of October. By this date, the Westwall defenses had been reoccupied and strengthened, so a deliberate assault was necessary. This operation followed standard US doctrine, beginning with an infantry attack by the 30th Division to secure the breakthrough, followed by the 2nd Armored Division for exploitation. This account focuses on a battalion-sized action south of Palenberg on October 2–3, 1944 at the start of the operation.
